Training Workshop on Surface Geophysics for Groundwater

The training workshop will be conducted by CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), Hyderabad with technical support from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).


This course will provide participants practical training on the use of electrical, electromagnetic, and passive seismic geophysical methods for groundwater-resources exploration, with an emphasis on mapping the location, thickness, and continuity of aquifer materials and clay aquitards/confining units in arsenic contaminated areas. Instruction on surface geophysical techniques commonly used in groundwater-resources exploration and the physical properties that govern their use will be provided. Time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) methods and two-dimensional (2D) electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and will be emphasized including basic theory, forward numerical modeling, field data acquisition, and data inversion. In addition, training on the acquisition and analysis of ambient seismic noise [also known as the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method] to delineate sediment/bedrock interface and constrain inversion of ERT/TEM data will be provided

Case studies will be used to illustrate the uses and limitations of surface geophysical methods in groundwater exploration. Classroom exercises will be conducted using numerical forward modeling techniques to illustrate the factors that affect the ability of geophysical methods to detect and resolve various hydrogeologic targets. Multiple field exercises will be conducted to train workshop participants in the use of surface geophysical instrumentation. The participants will analyze and interpret the data collected during the field exercises. At the conclusion of the course, participants will have a practical knowledge of the application of TEM, ERT, and ambient seismic noise methods.

Target Group:
The training is designed to raise the skill of Engineers and Geologist from Central and State Govt. The preferred candidates would be geo-physicist/geologist engaged in groundwater investigation or developments.
